- Rule no. 1! Make sure you are on time. Aim to be there 5 minutes early. Check out where you have to go and how to get there before the interview.
- Dress appropriately. Generally speaking, it is simply a case of dressing smartly, in clean and well pressed clothes. If uncertain, ask the consultant. Hair and nails should be clean and remove facial piercings.
- Conduct as much research as possible on your potential employer. This shows you are interested in the position. (With the internet, there is no excuse for not being able to find out about them. The more you know about them, the more confident you will be. It is better to know more than less. That way you won’t get caught out!)
- Take along any materials to help sell yourself. This includes certificates and references. If you’re going for a creative role, then take your portfolio. Once again, you are better to have more than not enough.
- Remember, you are also there to see if you want to work for this company. So, don’t just think of it as a one way interview. (This helps the nerves!)
- Ask some questions to let them know of your interest in the position and company. However, don’t interrogate them (as one of our candidates did once).
- Think before you speak! Some people get caught out by the question – What do you want to be doing in the next 5 years? Answer it relevant to the position you are going for.
We can tell you stories about where people missed out on a position that they well so well suited for, because they didn’t follow just one of these tips.
If you adhere to these points, you will be well prepared and feel confident. And then, you won’t get flustered! Good luck!
